The impact of mobile technology on DT and UC

29 October 2019

Advances in the mobility of technology has resulted in spend on digital transformation in 2019 being estimated to be more than 40pct greater than in 2017. This is likely to increase further as companies continue to leverage technology across their businesses to advance operations and deliver greater value. Unified communications, combining instant messaging, presence, voice, and mobility, is a growing part of digitization.

Digital transformation and unified communications are frequently enabled by mobile technology and have the potential to change the way people work by providing greater team collaboration, better communication, and workflow efficiency, through video meetings with integrated voice and content sharing and the ability to interact globally and get information in real-time from any device, anywhere.

Mobile provides a powerful convergence point for technologies like cloud computing, video conferencing, AI, data analytics, location tracking and IoT; and can help to ensure the right data is available to the right people when and where they need it, to enhance customer experience, improve workforce productivity, and fuel innovation. The right mobile technology solutions can even provide critical security protections to guard against data threats and breaches.

Some, maybe most, companies are still not leveraging these mobile  technologies to their full potential. Many are challenged to generate the level of measurable change that was planned for. The reasons for this are various but clearly it’s critical to have the right mobile technology in place to support digital transformation and unified communication targets. A business needs to consider many things including:

What are the primary mobile information workflow needs and challenges?

Are there specific mobile hardware and data requirements?

And perhaps most important; What kind of system integration and data access are needed to support mobile workflows and maximize productivity? Are there barriers to integration with key systems, such as POS and  legacy communication systems? Can the existing network support new mobile capabilities, including secure Wi-Fi access?

Digital transformation is a means to an end, not the end itself; even with the right technology.

Digital transformation and Unified Communication can provide meaningful ways for the business to enhance communications, but choosing the right vendors, solutions and putting the change plan in place is key to success. Therefore expert advice is the key for many organisations to success and goal fulfilment.
